Ballet Movie

The Cineplex movie theatre offers live ballet shows on the screen (some are recorded) throughout the season called Front Row Centre Events.

It's very nice that they show backstage, interview dancers, choreographers and composers, and introduce the history or background of the ballet, etc. Although you have the same amount of intermissions as the real theatre since it's a live show.

Last year, I saw Sleeping Beauty by the Royal Ballet in London. They were also going to offer Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, Swan Lake and La Fille mal gardée by the Royal Ballet this season again, but they are cancelled :(

Today, I went for the Legend of Love by Bolshoi Ballet. I had seen parts of this ballet but I never knew it was so interesting!

The theme was Arabian, Egyptian-ish, and the choreography by Yury Grigorovich was almost two dimensional, like Afterneen of a Faun choreographed by Nijinsky. I thought the choreography was very successful in showing the emotions of the Characters.

The story was full of dilemmas; the title should be the Dilemma of Life instead of the Legend of Love :P

I would love to see the next one, the Pharaoh's Daughter on November 20th but unfortunately, it will be on Thursday so I can't go...

The other ones that I'm interested in are:
- La Bayadere (dec. 7th)
- Swan Lake (Jan. 25th)
- Ivan the terrible (Apri. 19th)

(とってもアバウトな）訳：
残念ながら日本では行われていないようですが、バレエの舞台を映画館で中継するというイベントが世界中で行われており、今日はそのうちのひとつ、ボリショイバレエによるレジェンドオブラブ（邦題：愛の伝説）を見にいってきました。

ライブというだけあって、舞台裏や、開演前の舞台、ダンサーへのインタビュー、作品の歴史の紹介などもあり、盛りだくさんなのですが、難点はインターミッションもライブということ。

去年ロイヤルバレエの眠りを見にいったときに、インターミッション中に暇を持て余したことを教訓に、今回は本を持っていって退屈しのぎに成功。

「愛の伝説」は、今まで所々の映像しか見たことがなく、ストーリーに関して全く知識がなかったのですが、とても興味深かったです。いろんな形の愛とジレンマが入り混じって、表現するのが難しそうなストーリーなのですが、振付と曲が登場人物それぞれの性格や感情をとてもよく表していました。（衣装や大道具もよく考えられてます！）

ニジンスキーの「牧神の午後」のように動きが平面的な振付で、話がアラビアかエジプトあたりの設定だと思うのですが、なので特に手の動きに特徴がありました。

次の舞台は同じくボリショイによる「ファラオの娘」で、これも見たことがないのでとても興味があるのですが、残念ながら木曜の夜なので仕事中です。。。

今シーズンはその他に、ラ・バヤデール、白鳥の湖、イワン雷帝を見にいこうと思っています。

 

大学院

カナダに来て7年目。

なんと大学を飛び級し、大学院生生活を満喫しています。

（この場合の満喫は、朝から仕事に行くまでは読書浸り、図書館に通っては特大サイズのコーヒーを片手に論文を書いている、という意味です。）

普段の生活では使われないAcademic English と言われる単語や文章が飛び交っているので、最初は読書のペースを掴むのに苦労しましたが、最近になってようやく慣れてきたと感じられるようになりました。

例）
普段の生活では：
I know most people say bananas are yellow.

Academic Englishでは：
I argue that most individuals consider bananas to be yellow.

と、こんな感じです。例が例だけにうまく伝わらないかもしれませんが。

I（一人称）で文を始めることもあまり良しとされていないので、It is well-known... とか言った方が良いのかもしれませんが、マスターレベルになると自分の意見を推していくことが許されるようで、他の人の論文で時々見かけます。


3年間のマスターズプログラムを無事修了すると、教育学科のマスターズが授与され、おまけにRAD（Royal Academy of Dance) の教師資格をもらえるという優れものです。

あまりに膨大な読書量と迫りくる課題締め切りに、時には心が折れることもありますが、学校側からクビにされてしまうまでは（そんなことにならないよう祈りつつ）頑張ってついていきます！

明日も読書、明後日も読書、しあさっても。。。

Sunday

I don't usually do much on Sundays but it was different today!

I sewed two bags,

went to see the new ballet "Going Home Star" by RWB,

and 

went to a Japanese restaurant with my Japanese friends.


I will have to go back to studying tomorrow because I have an assignment deadline in a week!
