久ぶりにゆっくりできる日曜日なので、Winnipegの外食事情について少し書いてみようと思います。

まず、日本語では「レストラン」ですが、英語では最後のTを発音することを知ったのはカナダに来てから。

トロントやバンクーバーに比べるとWinnipegはかなり小さな街ですが、それなりに高級だったり、おいしかったりするレストランはいくつもあります。

外食について日本と１番違うのは、テイクアウトができること。

食べ残したものを箱に詰めてもらって持ち帰ることができるのはもちろん、ほとんどのレストランでテイクアウトとして注文して、店内で食べずに、家に持ち帰ることができます。
first, you can get a box to put your left over in and take home. Better yet, you can order food to go at most restaurants.

他に違うのは、全員の料理が一緒に運ばれてくること。
Second, everyone's food comes out together.

「冷めるからお先にどうぞ。」とか、「ごめんねー、じゃあお先に頂きます。」とかのやり取りをしなくて良いので助かります。
You don't have to have the typical conversations. "Go ahead before it gets cold", "I'll start if you don't mind..."

日本と違うこと、そして私が一番嫌いなのが、チップ！！！
The biggest difference which I hate the most is tipping!!!

もちろん強制ではないですが、最低１０％、平均１５％、とっても良いサービスを受けた時はもっと。。。 というのが一般的。
You are not obligated but it's usually, minimum 10%, average 15%, or more when you receive a really good service.  

でも消費税が１３％な上に、チップを１５％払っていたら、予想金額を大きく上回ることが多々あります。
13% sales tax and 15% tip, eating out can be very expensive!

チップなんて払わなくても良いサービスを受けられる国出身の私には、いつまで経っても納得のいかないシステムなのです。
Because I'm from Japan, the country with great service without tipping, I'm really annoyed by this system.

こちらでは、お客さんに要求させてはいけないというのが基本サービスのようで、日本の「すいませーん！」はありません。
Speaking of waiting on costumers, in Canada, you don't have to yell "excuse me!" when you want something.

ウェイター、ウェイトレスは、お客が席に着いたらすかさずドリンクの注文を聞き、メニューを見終わったころを見計らって食事の注文を聞き、食事中にも定期的に、「How's everything?」とチェックを入れにきます。
Your waiter/waitress is always waiting on you so s/he comes to you when you may or may not need something. Even when you are eating, s/he comes to your table and asks you "how's everything?" Then, you answer "good" with mouth full.

それを少し鬱陶しいと感じてしまうのは私だけなのか。。。
Is it just me that that's a little annoying?

何にしても、Sushiがおいしいお店が多いのはうれしいことです。
Anyway, I'm glad there are many good sushi restaurants in the city.

The busiest time of the year

またこの時期がやってきました。
It's this time of the year again.

今月末には生徒のバレエの試験の申込み用紙を書き上げ、３月初めには今シーズン最初のコンペティションがあります。
I have to fill out the application forms for my students' ballet exams by the end of this year, and then, some of my students will be dancing at the first competition of this season in the beginning of March.

その後は怒涛のコンペティション期間が続き、バレエの試験、リサイタル、全てがだだだだだーーー…と終わった後に、夏休み！
After that, my students and I will be busy with more competitions, ballet exam in April, recital, and so on, and finally, summer break!

まだ２月なのに６月の話をするのは気が早いかもしれませんが、毎年あっという間に過ぎてしまう３.５か月なのです。
It might be too soon to talk about June, but it happens that quickly every year.

今年はマスターズの論文もあるので、例年よりさらに大忙しかもしれません。
Additionally, I have assignmentｓ for my Master's program. I may be even busier than usual...

さて、気合を入れて頑張ります！

Breaking news 2!

締め切りが１２月中旬だった課題の成績が、ほとんど２か月待った今、やっとやっと発表されました。

こちらも合格点でした！しかもそこそこ良い点数で！！

日本語に翻訳されたもの（ウィキペディアとか）を読んでも、わかったような、わからないような哲学の本を英語で読み漁り、１０ページ以上の論文を書き、これだけやって合格しないならもう辞める！と思っていたのですが、合格したのでまだまだ旅は続きます。

来週には、大学院から正式な成績表が送られてくるそうです。

高校生の時には微塵もわからなかった、学ぶ楽しさ！社会人になってからでも学ぶ機会があって、それを実感できているのも、カナダ（に限らず英語圏）にいるからこそという気がします。

英語が喋れると、○○億人と話せる！というどこかの英会話学校のコマーシャルを思い出したのでした。

Breaking news!

速報！

一か月以上待って、今日ようやく１学期の成績が発表されました。
I waited for this for more than a month. They finally emailed me with the result of my summative assignment.

とは言っても、１学期は２教科同時進行だったのですが、今日メールされてきたのはそのうちの１つだけです。
However, they emailed me with only one result out of two. The result for the other module is still unknown.  

無事合格点を取ることができました！
I passed!

高得点というわけにはいきませんでしたが、８月にロンドンで行われた準備コースでコースディレクターが、他の国で８０点、９０点を取りなれている人は採点方法が全く違うので、自分の点数を見てびっくりしないように、と念をおしていたので（過去のブログもご参照ください）、まぁこんなもんなのかなー。
Although it wasn't a great mark, the course director told us at the induction seminar in London that the marking system in the UK is very different from Canada so people who are used to getting high marks may be surprised. So I think I did well.

何はともあれ、大学院卒業に必要な１８０クレジットの内、１５クレジットを手にしました。
Anyway, I got 15 credits out of 180 that is a requirement to receive a Master's degree from the university I'm in.

One step at a time!

Semester 2

２月になり、マスターズプログラムの２学期が始まりました。
Tomorrow will be the first day of semester 2 of the RAD Master's program.

２学期はいくつかのオプションの中から選択でき、私が選んだのはDance in the Private Sector: Its Scope and Influenceです。
One of the options I chose for this semester is Dance in the Private Sector: Its Scope and Influence.

まだ教科書も課題内容もさらさら～と読んでみただけですが、１学期の内容よりはずっと専門的なのでかなり面白そうです。
I haven't read the whole description in the study guide but it seems very interesting.

私立のバレエスクールと、公立のバレエスクールの違い、それぞれの目的、役割、責任などを理解、追求し、お互いのバランス関係をより良くすることができるかどうか、できるとしたら何をどうすればよいかをリサーチする勉強です。
I will be studying the difference between private dance schools and public dance schools, and the effects of each organization on students and each other.  

バレエスクールやダンススクールを、ダンサーや教師からの視点ではなく、ビジネスとして見ることも要求されます。
The summative assignment will be writing about my business plan, so I will need to have the perspective of a business person rather than a ballet teacher or dancer.

これからまた猛勉強の日々が始まりますが、それを少し楽しみにしている自分に驚きです。
I am surprisingly excited about studying hard, more than I thought I would be.

１学期の論文の成績がもうすぐ発表されるはずです。早く知りたいような、一生知りたくないような。。。
